Hotels & Accommodation

Great hotels do not always mean the number of stars they have. How are you greeted, personal touch, room meets your expectation, pleasant bathroom and location.

“Chilling out on the bed in your hotel room watching television, while wearing your own pyjamas, is sometimes the best part of a vacation.”

What makes a hotel a great hotel?

Not always when you search on the internet and you see the words – luxury, does it mean that you will have an amazing stay at that hotel? If you see something that meets your fancy, look for reviews on the internet and see if there are any negative comments. A good read is Tripadvisor Reveals the Best Hotels on the Planet. Tripadvisor is a good reference, but so are personal articles where people have actually visited the hotels.

A great hotel for a senior person goes beyond mere comfort and convenience. It takes into account specific considerations and amenities that cater to their needs and enhance their overall experience. Some key factors that make a hotel great for senior guests include:

  1. Accessibility: A senior-friendly hotel should have easily accessible entrances, ramps or elevators, and spacious hallways to accommodate mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers. Accessible rooms and bathrooms with grab bars and non-slip surfaces are also essential.
  2. Safety: Ensuring a safe environment is crucial. The hotel should have well-lit public areas, secure locks on doors and windows, and a staff that is trained in emergency protocols. Adequate lighting in rooms and bathrooms is particularly important for seniors with visual impairments.
  3. Comfortable and Ergonomic Features: Comfortable beds with supportive mattresses, adjustable height beds, and non-allergenic bedding contribute to a good night’s sleep. Chairs and sofas in common areas should offer proper support and be easy to get in and out of. Climate control options to adjust temperature and ventilation are also important for individual comfort.
  4. Amenities and Services: On-site amenities such as a restaurant, room service, and accessible dining options can be convenient for seniors who prefer not to venture far. Access to medical services, including a doctor or nurse on call, can provide peace of mind. Additionally, facilities like a fitness center, spa, or pool can offer opportunities for relaxation and exercise.
  5. Staff Assistance: Friendly and attentive staff who are knowledgeable about the specific needs of seniors can make a significant difference. They should be readily available to assist with luggage, offer guidance on nearby attractions, or provide any necessary accommodations.
  6. Location: Proximity to attractions, public transportation, and essential services like pharmacies or medical facilities can be beneficial for senior guests who prefer convenience and ease of access to nearby amenities.
  7. Quiet Environment: A peaceful and quiet atmosphere can contribute to a restful stay. Hotels with soundproof rooms or designated quiet areas can help ensure a good night’s sleep.

By considering these factors, a great hotel for a senior person can provide a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience, allowing them to fully relax and make the most of their stay.

What Makes the Perfect Airbnb

A perfect Airbnb for a senior person takes into account their specific needs and preferences, offering a comfortable and convenient environment that feels like a home away from home. Here are some features that make an Airbnb ideal for senior guests:

  1. Accessibility: The Airbnb should have easy access with no or minimal steps and preferably be located on the ground floor or have an elevator available. If there are stairs, handrails should be provided for safety. Clear pathways and wide doorways allow for easy maneuverability with mobility aids.
  2. Safety and Security: The Airbnb should be equipped with safety features such as well-lit pathways, secure locks on doors and windows, and functioning smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Adequate lighting in hallways and bathrooms is essential for visibility and preventing accidents.
  3. Comfort and Convenience: Comfortable furniture, including supportive seating options, is important for relaxation. The availability of amenities such as a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, and Wi-Fi can enhance convenience during the stay. Adjustable heating and cooling options contribute to individual comfort.
  4. Bathroom Accessibility: The bathroom should be designed with senior-friendly features, including grab bars, non-slip surfaces, and a walk-in or low-step shower with a seat. Adequate lighting and easily reachable toiletries are also beneficial.
  5. Clear and Detailed Listing: The Airbnb listing should provide clear and accurate information about the property, including the presence of any potential obstacles or hazards. Details about accessibility features, such as door widths and bathroom specifications, should be clearly mentioned.
  6. Proximity to Amenities: Consider an Airbnb located near amenities such as grocery stores, pharmacies, medical facilities, and public transportation for convenience and easy access to daily necessities.
  7. Responsive and Supportive Host: A great Airbnb experience for seniors is often enhanced by a responsive and accommodating host. A host who is available for assistance provides clear communication and is understanding of any specific requests or needs can make a significant difference in ensuring a comfortable stay.
  8. Quiet and Peaceful Environment: A serene and quiet location away from noisy streets or construction areas can contribute to a restful stay.

Alternative Accommodation for the Adventurous Spirit

In addition to traditional hotels and Airbnb options, alternative accommodations have gained popularity as unique and exciting choices for vacations. These alternative accommodations offer a different experience, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the local culture and create memorable moments.

From cozy bed and breakfasts in charming countryside villages to eco-friendly treehouses nestled in the heart of nature, there is an array of options to suit various preferences. Vacation rentals, farm stays, glamping sites, houseboats, and even tiny houses provide a distinctive and personalized experience that goes beyond the standard hotel room.

With alternative accommodations, travelers can embrace adventure, discover hidden gems, and enjoy a sense of novelty and authenticity during their vacations. Whether you seek tranquility, a unique architectural experience, or a chance to connect with nature, exploring alternative accommodations can add a touch of magic and create unforgettable memories during your travels.

Expected Service within the Hotel

How are you greeted on your arrival and each day when you return?  The personal touch of concern and respect for importance plays a vital role.  The feeling you are imposing where others feel you do not belong can definitely set the standard for your whole stay.

The room must meet my expectations of comfort and needs. When I look out the window, I do so appreciate a good view. If there is a verandah all the better. The bed must be large and the linen, duvet, and blankets must meet the season. Air Conditioning is vital but not always my favorite. I do welcome a bit of space and the writing desk must be large enough for me to actually use. Accessibility to plugs for charging my phone or using my laptop must be practical.

Bathroom!  This is a woman’s beloved!  I do not mind showering but if desired, relaxing in a bath after a day on tour is just the best!

Lounges can most certainly vary. If I am alone or in a group, I want to feel comfortable and safe going downstairs, reading a book, or socializing with friends, without feeling awkward.

Is there room service?  If you feel exhausted and want to stay in, what is the room service menu like? What type of breakfast is served and does the restaurant serve appetizing dishes?

If there is a problem are the staff quick to help?

Location of Accommodation

Is my accommodation accessible to where I would like to venture on foot or close to a bus stop? Is it safe in that area to venture outdoors for that walk? How safe is it at night to return to your bed? If I require to do some shopping, are malls close by or food stalls?

Other means of Accommodation

There are exciting alternative options other than what we have mentioned. The below will give you a bit of a well-deserved adventure in your life.
