What is Adventure Travel for Seniors
Don’t stop just because you are older or because others are telling you that you fit into the elderly category.
“We travel, some of us forever, to seek other places, other lives, other souls.”
Anais Nin
As a child, did you have dreams, or experiences that have stirred this desire within you? My father was a true adventurer and had a spirit of the wilderness. We continuously moved or embarked upon journeys into the eye of nature or the wilderness.
As I grew up, I had no fear as he taught me to prepare for that journey, go with someone who has done it before, has the experience, legs and knowledge and don’t be scared of being nervous, but look at your fear directly and cast it by the wayside. Stride forward with anticipation and love of your knowledge that will overflow you.
I carried this bubble and anticipation for many years. Not being scared and motivating myself to wonder what was around the corner. But as one gets older, fear and nervousness do creep in. That is why, when you get a glimpse of your childhood imaginings, reflect on them and now take action.
Let us look at the huge opportunity of adventurous travel that is waiting for you to embrace.
River Cruises
Wandering down rivers can be very safe yet audacious. Perfect for the senior traveller. What does a river cruise have on board? Scrumptious cuisine, breathtaking scenery from every stateroom, and ships that are designed to navigate the rivers. Unpack once into your hotel-style bedroom with a private bathroom. Some have lounges, bars and even libraries.
One group that comes highly recommended is Viking River Cruises. The Viking website is easy to follow and very informative and if interested you can ask questions. Vikings are also on Facebook and Twitter. Lovely Facebook page! Browse through the numerous River Cruises they offer.
Uniworld all-inclusive river cruising also offers luxury cruises. Go on land each day and explore the culture of where you stop.
Remember one can always go to a destination and go on a river cruise on a smaller boat, but it only lasts one day or half a day or a couple of hours. Wildlife swamp tours.
Hmmm, I can see you already becoming interested!
Hiking Tours
Hiking Tours are fabulous! Examine your surroundings and beauty on foot. Get to feel the landscape and have a birds-eye view of the terrain, small insects and wildlife. Admire the botany on the area closes up. Access areas that you can only get to on foot. The hidden secret places!
Walking or hiking tours geared for seniors are not planned to overexert you. It is wise to go on a tour, not solo as the guides take you to historical gems, or past wildlife to be stared at in awe. Whatever your preference or interest, you will be able to find it. Depending if you are fit or not, you do not need to walk very long distances per day. Odyssey Traveller suggests some popular walking tours throughout the world.
Make sure you have dressed appropriately. Most importantly your socks and shoes are vital! Socks such as the Dexshell Trekking Waterproof Sock – Black & Green are perfect AND waterproof. You never know if you are going to step into a puddle or stream.
Women’s Hook Loop High Top Warm Fur Lining Hiking Outdoor Casual Boots from Newchic are fabulous. So very comfortable! Super colours too and support the ankles. For the more serious hiker look at Outdoor Gear Lab. These makes of shoes have been highly tested!
Guided Air Tours
This is the absolute best! Browse through Cooks Air Tours. An experience which can never be duplicated anywhere else in the world.
“Cook’s Air Tours & Safaris is a South African-based inbound tour operator specialising in personalised guided luxury private Fly-In and Road safari packages in Southern Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Kruger National Park, Cape Town, Garden Route and Victoria Falls. There are no connecting flights and no time wasted at airports, waiting for your next connecting flight. The same pilots and guides are with you all the time.” What I love about William is that he is your pilot, and guide, and knows exactly where to stay, and what the best adventures are. This is a MUST!
“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Cycling Tours
Often cycling tours are combined with food. Your journey will be either combined with eating delicious cultural meals or cooking! I would strongly suggest that you are used to the saddle and are an avid cyclist before attempting these tours. I do know senior couples who have been on breathtaking, impressive cycling tours. Also, take a squizz at Headwater which is more varied in its destinations.
Wildlife Adventure Tours
I get goosebumps just thinking about wildlife and the adventure that goes with it. Get back to nature and experience it firsthand.
Responsible Travel has numerous destinations where you can have the quiver and ecstasy of the quest. They cater for numerous different types of wildlife tours.
Africa is my absolute favourite. Nothing beats the roar of the lion in the middle of the night or the cry of the fish eagle in the early hours of the morning. Accommodation varies from 6-star luxury lodges to beautifully furnished chalets. Game drives at the crack of dawn or evening, accompanied by an experienced guide.
“If I have ever seen magic, it has been in Africa.”
John Hemingway (American author)
Bird Watching Tours – (Twitching)
The older I get, the more I value and love birds! Maybe it is a thing that happens as we mature. I know I am not the only one. Maybe we appreciate and treasure the beautiful colours and cries of the birds in their natural ecosystems and now have time and patience to watch patiently. If you would like to start bird watching, read my article “Best bird-watching tips for beginners”. A truly inspirational hobby!
National Geographic’s lodges and hotels are snuggled in unspoilt wilderness. The variety of bird life in these areas is phenomenal and a bird watcher’s paradise.
“I think the most important quality in a birdwatcher is a willingness to stand quietly and see what comes. Our everyday lives obscure a truth about existence – that at the heart of everything there lies a stillness and a light.”
Lynn Thomson, Birding with Yeats
